Cinderella Artifact

During my Pocono Mountain Student Teaching placement, I had the privilege of writing the curriculum for, and teaching, an elective titled, "Fairy Tales, Myths, and Legends". One of the projects in the course was to create a modernized version of an old fairy tale. I chose Cinderella as the project tale because it is one of the oldest fairy tales in the world and exists across multiple cultures.  The students amazed me with their creativity and attention to detail. This project was the highest scoring one in the class, so I received permission from the students to use it in the future.

The following story tells the tale of Cinderella (the double "l" is pronounced "y" like in Spanish) and her widower father in Mexico. The views expressed in this story do not necessarily reflect my own.

Enjoy.

The students created a story that not only translated all the elements of the old tale into a modern setting but did so with humor and satire. Their choice to frame the current president as royalty is indicative of their perspective of government. I was particularly impressed that they included Cinderella's "sassy" attitude. In most stories of Cinderella, her character remains fairly consistent. She his humble and clever, but also a little bit of a prankster. She fools her sisters in the Irish version, "Ashley Pelt", and is very deceptive to her sisters in the Greek version.

I count this artifact as one of my greatest joys in teaching so far. The intent of my meaning-making strategy was to help students relate ancient lessons from Fairy Tales to modern lessons, and they did so beautifully.
